Do you want to make beautiful artworks using acrylic paint but don’t know how to commence? Don’t worry; Majestic Art by Rajesh has a complete guide to acrylic painting techniques for beginners out there. Painting in acrylic is like painting with plastic. It is not even close to painting with watercolors because it dries quickly.
Because acrylic painting is so adaptable, there are many things that you can do with acrylic colors. The only limit that you will be bound to have is your thoughts and perspective. Here we will cover some acrylic painting basics and acrylic painting techniques, such as tinting, blending and altering opacity.
Step 1: Prepping the surface
i. Get the painting surface: It is completely your choice where you want to paint with acrylics. You can use wood sections with cross supports, a piece of plywood, or paint on the canvas board or stretch your canvas.
ii. Layer the surface of wood: For this, you first need to find a textured or an origami paper. If you want a plain background, then cover the surface with white. For paper, cover the wood with a decoupage medium and layer onto the top.
iii. Sand the surface: After this, you need to wet the surface and sand it with sandpaper. This is done to smooth the surface.
Step 2: Painting
i. Make certain that the paint stays in a fine condition. This is because acrylic paint dries up very quickly, making it difficult to work with. Here are some acrylic painting techniques that will make your paint workable.
ii.Use the paint opacity with water. Whether you apply the acrylic paint straight from the tube or you mix them with a solid white one, acrylic paints tend to look opaque. You can manipulate the cloudiness of the color by adding more amount of water. More the water, more transparent the color gets. Transparent paints are best used for watercolor or airbrush effects.
iii. The best acrylic painting technique is to paint with the large brushes first and then the smaller and detailed ones. Larger outlines should be made first leading to the detailed ones. Outlining is best done with the opaques.
iv. Make it a habit to blot the paintbrushes. Once you rinse the colored brushes in water, make sure that you dab them lightly on a clean cloth. This is done to avoid the blemished paint onto the canvas.
v. Thinning out the acrylics. This is another acrylic painting technique for beginners. Use at least 20% water when you mix the paint (done by volume as compared to the paint).
vi. Occasionally look at the painting in the mirror. This will help you to reveal if there are any discrepancies in the painting.
vii. The key is to blend the colors. Blending the colors is both fun and intimidating at times. You will not learn it in a day. Blending is an art and it comes with patience and lot of experiments.
viii. Create hard edges with the help of masking tape. You can apply the masking tape to the paint that has dried without damaging it. You just need to press down the tape below it. Once you have painted the hard edge, remove the masking tape to expose the straightened line.
ix. Tinting and shading should be done. Supposedly you have a base of red and you want to make it lighter, or you have a base of yellow and you wish to make it darker. You can do this easily by either adding black or white. When we lighten the colors, it is called tinting and when the colors are being darkened, it is known as shading. Remember this is also done by practice and experimentation.
At the end of the day, always remember that a masterpiece is not made in a day. Leonardo da Vinci spent 12 years of his life in painting Mona Lisa’s Lips.
These were some of the acrylic painting techniques which will surely help you whilst painting. Hope you all have learned a few acrylic painting basics. Enjoy painting the canvases.
